World Without Us
03:44
|
|||
The businessman will take his cut
of all the good things we have wrought
tangled in our weary lives
and I'll smile on my way down
Someone that I loved before
but don't remember anymore
I wonder if she's still around
or if she cut another corner
on her way out
Free air
Good and growing
Would you welcome the world without us?
It's coming again
They came for money in the night
Who am I to stand and fight
Maybe you will understand
when you're clinging to nothing
Can't stand a minute on my own
Can't stand time unless I'm stoned
I used to be someone to trust
but now I laugh about lying
and I miss your
Free air
Good and growing
Would you welcome the world without us?
It's coming again

We set out in the naked dawn to have something to talk about
in a few years over dinner
Coming down the hill just feeling like a hundred miles an hour
Harmonica piercing through the friendship
And in a way with crippling fear we left the drugs and bought some beer
and cooled down
Well who are you to judge me so, there's things about me you don't know
But you're right, I'll slow down
I never saw you break before, laid out all that brings you down
and we sat there trying to console you
I've known her longer than you have but you loved her hard and then it crashed
but someday she'll surely turn around
And when she does you'll rest again and know yourself and to be a man
who's happy
I lit a candle, paid the fee and asked the sky to humour me
and give you a chance to get even
We made fast friends and opened up, said hi to every single soul
and always, the favour was returned
We drove away as a song came on, and I knew that I'd fallen deep
in love, aching in my stomach
We left the land where his mother stays and thought about the simple days
before
There's no way we could forget with the rock that lays there by her bed
It looks like it has always been there
The night was long but the drive felt quick and as we went on I got sick
of sadness
So bring the winter bring the snow, it doesn't matter, we all know
that next year, the sun will reappear

Soul Of A Woman
02:30
|
|||
The soul of a woman, parade in the light
I watch from the hallway and I tell her good night
Won't you settle and calm down
and I'll be good to you
Ten thousand people sit by the bay
I show them my feelings and they look the other way
They don't care, but I do
and I'll be good to you
I remember you naked that night by the lake
You had been sleeping and I kissed you awake
In a wooden playhouse
You were good to me

The Devil Has No Home
04:34
|
|||
Dean had both his hands tied up in business
So Johnny took control of the wheel
Barry in the back barking "we're finished"
Let's get out of town and blow the deal
His woman still at home pacing circles 'round the phone
Waiting for some good news, feeling bad
The evening sun was gold on the horizon
and maggie must've missed the detour sign
We ended up on the wrong side of the highway
and suddenly her smiling eyes met mine
Her boyfriend's drinking tea with his mother at the beach
wondering why he suddenly feels sad
I heard that someone died out on the highway
They're saying it was clearly Hit and Run
The car they drove was just reported stolen
One moment you're alive the next you're gone
I wonder how it'd be if it was not her but me
I get these crazy pictures in my head
It's all right, I'll just use a little imagination
And you'll be at my window tonight
Just give yourself a break and take me for a little vacation time
And you'll know just the way to make it right
The devil has no home, it is always on the road
there's bound to be a moment when you meet

Trumpets
02:40
|
|||
Grasping at a cloud is all I've ever really done
Sorting through my memories I think this is the one
where everything just fell apart
birthed a creature in my heart
I think this is the one
Waiting for the wave to come and sitting in the sand
You start to see the colours and you start to hear The Band
Is this the thing they sing about?
When they bring their trumpets out
and you start to hear The Band
We've passed so many hills before
and now we'll never speak again
No we'll never speak again
No we'll never speak again
Take me only if you need, take me only if you want
Show me everything I need to see here in my time
If you want to help me out, take me to the water
or take me to the sun
Or take me to the sun

Bald Eagle
05:35
|
|||
I skipped along the rising water
was cradled in the river, and settled in the sun
I thought of how my life was changing
how troubles were fading, and the woman I loved
And the weather was the kind that I remembered
from my first day in Seattle, on the 4th of July
when I saw the bald eagle fly
I saw the sadness in the lion's eyes
as he watched his little brother die under a claw
I thought of making different choices
of answering all their questions and finally being free
And I felt like I fell into a painting,
one I saw in Amsterdam, on the day I first knew
that it had always been you
And now, in final desperation
I let go of the darkness and I move towards the light
Just think of what you'll leave behind now
and what there is to gain and how it's all decided
The people I met throughout my lifetime
They're walking in a line now and show me a smile
I'll be home in just a little while

Sacrifice
04:01
|
|||
Everything was new once
But everything grew old
I'm stuck in an abandoned town
Scraping for gold
Well everything had eyes once
But eventually grew blind
It all looks so much smaller now
when I turn to look behind
I came here to take pictures
but I ended up with lines
It doesn't make much difference though,
they're both ways to capture time and
If it means a single night
without stumbling into a distant sleep
I will make the sacrifice
I remember feeling good once
But then everything turned bad
Now I'm steady on my way
going back to what I had
And if it's true, if you can only really love once
I will lay it in your hands
Somehow become a part of
all that you have planned
I came to find the shrine here
Well it's a temple now instead
It doesn't make much difference though
They're both tributes to the dead and
If it means a single thought
that's not crawling out of the darkest place
I will make the sacrifice
And if you my dear across the sea
could somehow take notice of me
I would make the sacrifice

Killer Whales Of Eden
05:13
|
|||
I had a traveling dream of a ship bound for the east
Around the cape of good hope, made sure the gods were pleased
The sea can be a maiden fair but only if you're true
'Caus if you're not she'll come right up and make a fool of you
I found a deck of cards and I laid them out to see
Wether we'd be reaching the place I tried to be
The hangman and the devil were laying side by side
So I looked out on the rolling blue and told her 'No, not tonight'
Oh killer whales of Eden
come and take me where
I can be a whaler
We pulled our boats ashore and we looked out on the land
We were greeted by the people and we laid down in the sand
Taken to a country house where we sat and drank
We talked about Australia and the gods we had to thank
And in the night they came, warned us with their tails
Splashing in the water, Eden's killer whales
They showed us where our fortunes lay and sang about the seas
And in my dreams I saw the sun and it put my heart at ease
Oh killer whales of Eden
come and take me where
I can be a whaler

Over You
04:15
|
|||
A sizable part of my soul
I put it down in the hole
and now I'm over you
Over you
Walking a thinning line
Worrying all of the time
but I'm over you
Over you
With my head underwater
I'm lighting up the sky for you
'Caus I'm over you
You tried to stay quiet
but I had to go out and try it
now I'm over you
Over you
Saw a light in your face
that stays with me to this day
But now I'm over you
Over you
Come on over to the beach
and we'll go another time or two
though I'm over you
And when we meet again
I don't know where and don't know when
You will see that I'm over you
You can take me by the hand
and you can promise me something you can't even understand
But I'm over you
With my head underwater
I'm lighting up the sky for you
'Caus I'm over you

County Fair
03:35
|
|||
I wanna take you to the county fair
There's lotsa happy pretty people there
I wanna take you to the county fair
where we can be together
and fall in love again
I wanna take you on the ferris wheel
I wanna ask about the way you feel
I wanna take you on the ferris wheel
with the sun going down
and the wheel keeps turning 'round
I wanna try to be your friend tonight
I wanna tell you it will be all right
I wanna try to be your friend tonight
And just to walk you home
will be enough to satisfy me
I wanna take you to the county fair
There's lotsa happy pretty people there
I wanna take you to the county fair
where we will be together
and fall in love again

Year Of The Wolf
04:59
|
|||
One day I'll melt into the dawn
One day I'll fade out like a song
A song you'll never hear again
So you'll keep listening till the end
Away you go into a world that's yours
and still you know, it's only for a while
And the love you hold is all that I can feel
So I close my eyes and wonder if it's real
Move away from everything you know
Now the lights go out and there's nowhere to go
